Effects of carprofen administered by different routes to control experimental uveitis in dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ribeiro,A.P.; Escobar,A.; Motheo,T.F.; Sakamoto,C.A.M.; Godoy,G.S.; Costa,M.A.N.; Laus,J.L..
Efficacy of carprofen, administered by different routes, was studied in experimental uveitis in dogs. Anterior chamber paracenteses was accomplished at two different moments (M0 and M1), with a five hour interval between them. At M0 and M1, 0.2mL of aqueous humor was collected and quantitation of total protein and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were determined. Four groups were formed (n=8), which received carprofen at the end of M0, by the following routes: subcutaneous (GIm), subconjunctival (GII), and topical (GIII). A fourth group that received no treatment was instituted (Control). Conjunctival histopathology of the GII animals was performed. In all groups, values of protein and PGE2 significantly enhanced at M1; however, they did not significantly change...

At M0 and M1, 0.2mL of aqueous humor was collected and total protein and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) quantitation was determined. A fourth group that received no treatment was instituted (Control). Conjunctival histopathology of the GII was performed. Results were evaluated statistically (P≤0.05). In all groups, protein and PGE2 values enhanced significantly in M1. Protein and PGE2...

Ocular manifestations of leishmaniasis in a cat: first case report from Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Madruga,G.; Ribeiro,A.P.; Ruiz,T.; Sousa,V.R.F.; Campos,C.G.; Almeida,A.B.P.F.; Pescador,C.A.; Dutra,V..
ABSTRACT An 8-year-old domestic short hair female cat initially presented with bilateral uveitis with pseudotumoral appearance. The patient tested negative for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Toxoplasma gondii. Histopathology of a granulomatous lesion on the upper left conjunctiva revealed amastigotes compatible with Leishmania spp. Aqueous humor was aspired and the diagnosis was confirmed after isolation of promastigotes cultivated in biphasic NNN medium and by positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Leishmania infantum. Treatment with allopurinol (10mg/kg/ BID/PO) was commenced and a natural insect repellent was prescribed. Six months of treatment with allopurinol associated with the initial topical medications...

The anti-IRBP IgG1 and IgG2a response does not correlate with susceptibility to experimental autoimmune uveitis BJMBR
Vieira de Moraes,L.; Martins,G.A.; Flangini,M.; Ibañez,O.M.; Sant'Anna,O.A.; Rizzo,L.V..
Susceptibility to experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) in inbred mice has been associated with a dominant Th1 response. Elevated anti-inter-photoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (anti-IRBP) IgG2a/IgG1 antibody ratios have been implicated as candidate markers to predict disease severity. In the present study, both the anti-IRBP antibody isotype and severity of EAU phenotypes were examined in 4 non-isogenic genetically selected mouse lines to determine if they can be used as general markers of disease. Mice between 8 and 12 weeks old selected for high (H III) or low (L III) antibody response and for maximum (AIR MAX) or minimum (AIR MIN) acute inflammatory reaction (AIR) were immunized with IRBP. Each experiment was performed with at least 5 mice per...

Treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis with an intraocular sustained-release ganciclovir implant BJMBR
Muccioli,C.; Belfort Jr.,R..
The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy and complications of the use of an intraocular sustained-release ganciclovir implant for the treatment of active cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS patients. Thirty-nine eyes of 26 patients were submitted to ocular surgery. All patients underwent complete ocular examination before and after surgery. The surgical procedure was always done under local anesthesia using the same technique. The mean time for the surgical procedure was 20 min (range, 15 to 30 min). The average follow-up period was 3.7 months. Of all patient, only 4 presented recurrence of retinitis after 8, 8, 9 and 2 months, respectively. Three of them received a successful second implant. All 39 eyes of the 26 patients...

Uveitis associated to the infection by Leishmania chagasi in dog from the Olinda city, Pernambuco, Brazil Ciência Rural
Brito,Fábio Luiz da Cunha; Alves,Leucio Câmara; Duque Ortiz,Juan Pablo; Maia,Federico Celso Lyra; Silva Junior,Valdemiro Amaro da; Laus,Jose Luiz.
Among the parasitic diseases, Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) is included in the systemic illnesses of chronic evolution that attack men and dogs, presenting varied clinical manifestations as cachexia, dermatologic lesions, peripheral lymphadenopathies, besides the ocular lesions. This work report the case of a dog clinically suspected of having CVL, presenting skin lesions, cachexia, gryphosis, and ocular signs of uveitis. The parasitological diagnosis was accomplished for Canine Leishmaniasis through the visualization of amastigote forms of Leishmania chagasi in smears of bone marrow fluid aspirate, of non-lesioned, and lesioned skin. Alterations in the ocular structures are characterized mainly by mononuclear-plasmocitic infiltrate.

Uveitis due to anaplasmosis in a newborn Holstein calf Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Laus,J.L.; Ortiz,J.P.D.; Vicenti,F.A.M.; Brito,F.L.C.; Wehrle,L.M.; Castro Netto,A.; Lisbão,C.B.S..

Uveitis following anti-snake venom therapy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Nayak,S. G.; Satish,R.; Nityanandam,S.; Thomas,R. K..
Snakebite is a common medical emergency in the tropics, causing multisystemic involvement. Ophthalmic manifestations after snakebite have included ptosis and ophthalmoplegia. Uveitis as an immunological complication following therapy with anti-snake venom (ASV) serum has been rarely reported in literature. We reported two patients who developed uveitis and acute renal failure following snakebite treatment with ASV serum. Both patients recovered uneventfully with appropriate therapy.
